The devastating earthquake of 25 April 2015 affected thousands of families across Nepal, causing widespread loss of lives, homes, and livelihoods. Older adults and other vulnerable groups faced even greater challenges as communities struggled to recover.
Bihani Social Venture responded by launching relief, recovery, and rehabilitation initiatives to support affected communities. With the support of volunteers, well wishers, families, friends, and partner organizations, we provided immediate assistance while helping communities rebuild with dignity and hope.
Our work included distributing relief materials, visiting affected communities in Bhotechaur and Dolakha, and supporting Matatirtha Old Age Home and Hope Hermitage Nepal. We also carried out needs assessments to better understand the challenges faced by older adults and other vulnerable groups.
Recognizing that recovery extends beyond physical rebuilding, Bihani introduced psychosocial support and trauma recovery programmes in collaboration with organizations including IsraAid, AIESEC Kathmandu, and Isha Foundation. These initiatives promoted emotional wellbeing, community resilience, and long term recovery.
One of our key initiatives, the BW Thread Ahead Project, encouraged community participation while exploring sustainable rebuilding solutions such as low cost bamboo housing. Alongside these efforts, we continued providing essential supplies and community support where they were needed most.
The 2015 earthquake strengthened Bihani-s commitment to supporting communities during times of crisis. It reaffirmed our belief that recovery is not only about rebuilding homes, but also about restoring hope, dignity, resilience, and meaningful human connections.
