Standing Together During COVID-19

When the COVID-19 pandemic reached Nepal, senior citizens became one of the most vulnerable groups. Lockdowns, social distancing, and movement restrictions increased loneliness, social isolation, mental health concerns, and the risk of elder abuse while limiting access to healthcare, essential services, and daily support.

Recognizing these challenges, Bihani adapted its programmes to ensure that no senior citizen was left behind. Through the dedication of our members, volunteers, healthcare professionals, counsellors, and partner organizations, we continued providing care, connection, and practical support throughout the pandemic.

We stayed connected with senior citizens through regular phone calls, social media, and digital platforms because social distancing should never mean social isolation. Our team also provided Psychosocial Support, Psychological First Aid (PFA), and Para Professional Counselling (PPC), while connecting individuals with psychologists and medical professionals whenever specialized support was needed.

Bihani worked closely with communities and partner organizations to deliver groceries, medicines, hygiene supplies, masks, sanitizers, and other essential items to senior citizens, residential care homes, and elderly inmates in correctional facilities. We also assisted members with grocery shopping, utility bill payments, medication collection, and other essential errands during lockdowns, ensuring they could continue living safely and independently.

Beyond emergency relief, we strengthened digital inclusion by organizing online sessions with healthcare professionals and experts, encouraging social interaction, and helping senior citizens use technology to stay informed, connected with loved ones, and engaged in community activities. We also supported older adults in sharing their knowledge, experiences, and life stories through blogs and other digital platforms, ensuring their voices continued to be heard.

These efforts were made possible through the generosity of volunteers, donors, schools, businesses, community groups, and social impact partners who worked alongside Bihani to support vulnerable senior citizens across Nepal. Together, we provided essential resources, strengthened community care, and demonstrated that healthy ageing is built not only on healthcare, but also on compassion, inclusion, dignity, and meaningful human connection.
